Independent Living Furniture for the Individual with a Physical Disability

I am interested in designing furniture to enhance the home life of individuals with physical disabilities.  Such furniture should make navigation and movements in the home easy.  The furniture must support a person's activities and experiences, not restrict them.  The furniture can be interesting and attractive.  In the future, and based on the information I gain from my survey (keep reading below), I will use this page to show design concepts, models and prototypes of furniture for independent living for individuals with physical disabilities.

If you are interested in commissioning a piece of custom furniture or have thoughts about accessible furniture and want to share them, please email me under *Contact*.

Survey on Furniture For The Individual With Physical Disability

Furniture design for a person with a physical disability is inherently custom. Based upon my limited research, I do not see much offered to this group.  While I am interested in designing and making furniture for individuals who are physically disabled, I do not have a physical disability, and apart from my research on and interest in this topic, I lack the personal knowledge and experience necessary to begin designing in earnest.

Therefore, as a first step, I have drafted a set of questions to obtain information and understanding from those with a physical disability.  I am asking individuals to consider how their furniture does and does not serve their needs in the home. My hope is that the survey will reveal general problems, patterns, or themes.

With this information and a better understanding of key needs, I will move through steps to get to the point of designing prototypes.  At that point, I will again seek feedback to further refine and improve my furniture solutions. These foundational pieces will provide a starting point to make custom furniture for individuals with physical disabilities.
